Nicholas Garbett – 1st Horn

February 2016 – June 2018

Nicholas started playing the organ at the age of 7 when his feet could barely reach the pedals. A lot has changed since then! Within the same year he started having lessons on the tenor horn.

Whilst at Fred Longworth High School he took part in the school Community Band, Wind Band and Orchestra. On a Wednesday evening he would join his Grandad at the Ellenbrook and Boothstown Brass Band and would later take up a full time position many years later. His playing developed considerably whilst at Fred Longworth, tutored by Brian Taylor.

Nicholas has been fortunate to have performed in France, Holland, Belgium, Germany and even at the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo, Canada in 2008 & 2009.

Nicholas successfully gained a BA Hons. and MA from the University of Salford in Music, focusing on composition and conducting under the baton of David King, Roy Newsome and Peter Graham. Nicholas has since completed a PGCE in secondary education at the Manchester Metropolitan University and currently works as a curriculum music specialist in primary education.

Nicholas has taken up positions in various bands over the years including University of Salford, Ellenbrook and Boothstown, Golborne (MD of Youth Band), Tyldesley, Eccles and most recently, Flixton. Although focusing on performance, Nicholas thoroughly enjoys conducting and in 2014 – 2015 took up the position of musical director of the Stretford Brass Band.

Nicholas is a published composer and arranger of Band and Wind music and is also a keen amateur photographer.

“Winning the North West Areas 2nd Section in 2017. Taking part in the production of ‘Brassed Off!’ with Tyldesley Brass Band and also performing the Olympic Fanfare and Theme on Fanfare trumpets dressed in full period costume at the 2008 & 2009 Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo”
