Red Admiral contest

October 1, 2026 By Andy Vail Leave a Comment

The band visited Chorley at the weekend for the Red Admiral Entertainments contest. This is a recent and welcome addition to our contest calendar as it is such a well-run event.

We performed a 20-minute programme that was a tribute to Freddie Mercury, who would have turned 80 this year. We started with Innuendo, featuring Chris Noakes and Tom Scaife on trumpets. Love of My Life saw our first baritone player, Bec Williams, take her bow as a contest soloist. Her performance was described as “classy” by the adjudicators – not bad!

Next up we featured Katie Tyson Philips (cornet) and Louis Dawes (euphonium) performing the powerful duet, Barcelona. We finished the programme with a medley of Queen hits described as “a clever arrangement” by the adjudicator. Thanks go to the arranger – our own, very talented, Mero Conroy.

We were a little disappointed to finish 5th but the field was very strong and the day very well spent.

Flixton Band is currently self-funding and does not benefit from sponsorship. Originally formed in 1877, the Flixton Volunteer Band was the result of the formation of the Flixton 1st Volunteer Battalion, Manchester Regiment. (This was the Territorial Army of the period.) The services of the band were in much demand and it gradually became known locally as the Flixton Volunteers Band. … Learn More »

Flixton Band

The band re-formed in 1967, when it became known as the Flixton Silver Band, and was granted permission to use the Urmston coat of arms on band uniforms and stationery. To this day we still use the coat of arms in association with our band.
