What a week!

June 26, 2023 By Andy Vail Leave a Comment

On Friday 16th we performed a summer concert at St Clement’s Church in Urmston. Despite sweltering conditions the audience were treated to outstanding solos from Vicky Finlay and Richard Bond. Richard was making his debut as a stand-up soloist with us. He was a founder member of our training band as a beginner 10 years ago and has recently taken over the solo euphonium seat. The audience was left in no doubt as to his talent as his sound filled the fabulous acoustic of the church.

On Saturday 17th it was our MD, Matt’s turn to perform. He had qualified for the final round of the Brass Band Conductors Association competition. The Conductors Award was sponsored by Yamaha and attracted high calibre competitors from across the world. Matt’s enthusiasm, confidence and musical insights impressed the judges and he took first place. Full story and picture are available here. Congratulations Matt!

On Sunday 18th it was our Community Band taking the honours, making it three wins out of three at the Kirkby Lonsdale Contest for community bands. Our special congratulations go to Evelyn, whose trombone solo deservedly scooped the award for best under-16 soloist.

Then yesterday the main band was back in action at the Blackburn and Darwen March and Hymn contest. The band survived a cloudburst during their performance of Mephistopheles and went home with the trophy for first overall, beating some impressive competition from Championship and other First Section Bands. Where next…?

Welcome to Flixton Band

Flixton Band maintains a proud tradition of music making, which dates back over 140 years. The Band is currently graded first section by the National Brass Band Association of Great Britain, the highest of any Trafford Band. Flixton Band is currently self-funding and does not benefit from sponsorship. Originally formed in 1877, the Flixton Volunteer Band was the result of the formation of the Flixton 1st Volunteer Battalion, Manchester Regiment. (This was the Territorial Army of the period.) The services of the band were in much demand and it gradually became known locally as the Flixton Volunteers Band. … Learn More »

Flixton Band

The band re-formed in 1967, when it became known as the Flixton Silver Band, and was granted permission to use the Urmston coat of arms on band uniforms and stationery. To this day we still use the coat of arms in association with our band.
