A Whit Friday to remember

June 13, 2022 By Andy Vail Leave a Comment

It may not have started well. Closure of the M56 left Matt, our conductor, still on his way to Saddleworth as we took to the stage in Grotton. Will’s first experience of Whit Friday was conducting rather than playing. Well done, Will!

By the time we played at Lydgate, our second village, band and conductor were re-united. The serious part of the day could get underway. For the first time anyone could remember we managed to get around all 10 Saddleworth villages performing The Wizard. Although not in the prizes, we consistently placed well and ended the night 19th overall among the 107 bands who competed on the night.

The sun was out and so were the crowds. People were ready to be entertained after the pandemic lockdowns of recent years. We had them quite literally dancing in the streets at every village.

Scouthead – village 10 of 10 on the night!

Next stop Kirkrade and the World Music Festival in a few weeks’ time.

Welcome to Flixton Band

Flixton Band maintains a proud tradition of music making, which dates back over 140 years. Flixton Band is currently self-funding and does not benefit from sponsorship. Originally formed in 1877, the Flixton Volunteer Band was the result of the formation of the Flixton 1st Volunteer Battalion, Manchester Regiment. (This was the Territorial Army of the period.) The services of the band were in much demand and it gradually became known locally as the Flixton Volunteers Band. … Learn More »

Flixton Band

The band re-formed in 1967, when it became known as the Flixton Silver Band, and was granted permission to use the Urmston coat of arms on band uniforms and stationery. To this day we still use the coat of arms in association with our band.

Rehearsals

Flixton Band rehearses on Mondays and Thursdays at the Coach House on Flixton Road. Both rehearsals are 8pm to 10pm.

Thanks to a partnership formed in May 2013 our training band, the Flixton Community Band, rehearses at Flixton Junior School on Delamere Road from 10am to noon each Saturday.

Let’s hope it contributes towards bringing us even more success going forward!
