Someone Special

November 8, 2021 By Andy Vail Leave a Comment

At a Special General Meeting of the Band, Paul Thomason was thanked for his incredible service. Paul retired from playing this autumn after nearly 30 years with Flixton, mostly as Band Manager (12 years) or Assistant Band Manger.

In Paul’s time the band has faced several challenges and we owe our current stability as an organisation in large part to his efforts. Paul’s many achievements include securing a new band room when our previous location at Bowfell House was due to be bull-dozed to make space for a new residential home. He was also instrumental in the vision to create our Community Band and in obtaining the charitable funds to provide new instruments to realise this vision.

Will Haw, who recently took up where Paul left off, presented Paul with Life Membership. The meeting also approved Paul’s appointment as an Honorary Vice President of the organisation.

We wish Paul all the very best and trust that we will be seeing him regularly as he takes advantage of his free concert attendance.

Flixton Band maintains a proud tradition of music making, which dates back over 140 years. The Band is currently graded first section by the National Brass Band Association of Great Britain, the highest of any Trafford Band. Flixton Band is currently self-funding and does not benefit from sponsorship. Originally formed in 1877, the Flixton Volunteer Band was the result of the formation of the Flixton 1st Volunteer Battalion, Manchester Regiment. (This was the Territorial Army of the period.) The services of the band were in much demand and it gradually became known locally as the Flixton Volunteers Band. … Learn More »

Flixton Band

The band re-formed in 1967, when it became known as the Flixton Silver Band, and was granted permission to use the Urmston coat of arms on band uniforms and stationery. To this day we still use the coat of arms in association with our band.

Flixton Band rehearses on Mondays and Thursdays at the Coach House on Flixton Road. Both rehearsals are 8pm to 10pm.

Thanks to a partnership formed in May 2013 our training band, the Flixton Community Band, rehearses at Flixton Junior School on Delamere Road from 10am to noon each Saturday.

Let’s hope it contributes towards bringing us even more success going forward!
