Contesting

Denis celebrates our win at Blackpool 2017

Contesting is an important part of the Brass Banding calendar. Bands are ranked in Championship, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Sections. Flixton Band currently competes in the First Section.

Our most important contest of the year is the North West Regional Championships. The ‘Areas’, as these are known, are held in February/March. Results at the Areas over the last three years determine promotion and relegation. A high placing in any year (usually the top two or three) also qualifies to represent the North West Region at the National Championships, held in September.

Flixton were the Second Section Champions in 2017 and again qualified in 2018 to compete in September at the National Finals in Cheltenham. These consecutive high finishes earned us promotion to the First Section from January 2019.

Throughout the year many other contests are held. Some are set-piece contests like the Areas and others allow own-choice. At ‘entertainment’ contests bands play a short concert-style programme. The Whit Friday Marches are an amazing annual spectacle. Villages across Saddleworth and Tameside each host a march contest on the same evening with over 100 bands from around the world competing at as many as possible.

Welcome to Flixton Band

Flixton Band maintains a proud tradition of music making, which dates back over 140 years. The Band is currently graded first section by the National Brass Band Association of Great Britain, the highest of any Trafford Band. Flixton Band is currently self-funding and does not benefit from sponsorship. Originally formed in 1877, the Flixton Volunteer Band was the result of the formation of the Flixton 1st Volunteer Battalion, Manchester Regiment. (This was the Territorial Army of the period.) The services of the band were in much demand and it gradually became known locally as the Flixton Volunteers Band. … Learn More »

Flixton Band

The band re-formed in 1967, when it became known as the Flixton Silver Band, and was granted permission to use the Urmston coat of arms on band uniforms and stationery. To this day we still use the coat of arms in association with our band.

Rehearsals

Flixton Band rehearses on Mondays and Thursdays at the Coach House on Flixton Road. Both rehearsals are 8pm to 10pm.

Thanks to a partnership formed in May 2013 our training band, the Flixton Community Band, rehearses at Flixton Junior School on Delamere Road from 10am to noon each Saturday.

Let’s hope it contributes towards bringing us even more success going forward!
