Flixton Band have won the Pontin's Brass Band Championships. The competition, which is open to bands all over Great Britain, is one of major contests in the brass band calendar. In addition to winning the Pontin's trophy, Flixton Band also won £1750 which is the largest prize awarded to bands outside the "top" level.
Flixton were drawn to play early on in the day, but gave a performance which received a tremendous ovation from the audience, and remained unsurpassed in the view of the two judges.
Playing the set test piece "Excelsior" by Howard Snell, which was considered as being exceptionally difficult, Flixton gave "a majestic performance, with much to admire" Both judges felt that Flixton Band were a class above the other bands.
Band Manager Michael Rowley said "This is a fantastic result for the band, and down to a lot of hard work, and an inspirational Musical Director".
Since the appointment of Kevin Gibbs as M.D. In May 2004, Flixton Band have won prizes in 9 out of the 11 contests entered, including during 2005, 1st prize at The High Peak Championships, and now the Pontin's Championships.
