Did you Know? The majority of the instruments of the Brass Band have a conical bore -- this means that the diameter of the tubing increases gradually throughout the length of the instrument. The alternative kind of bore is called cylindrical, which means that the diameter of the tubing remains constant throughout most of its length, and then flares suddenly at the bell of the horn. Cylindrical bore instruments have a brighter, piercing sound, while those with a conical bore have a much more mellow tone. A trumpet is a cylindrical instrument; the conical equivalent is the cornet. Conical bore instruments are the key to the mellow, well-rounded sound of a Brass Band.
