2nd Cornet - Katharine Nelson

Katharine started banding at primary school aged 9, taught by John Newbegin. She moved to Orrell when 10 and carried on learning at Old Hall Youth Band, under the direction of Neil Parkinson and then Greg Patmore. Greg Patmore then went to conduct Trinity Girls Band and asked Katharine to go with him. She stayed at Trinity for a few years playing in their 40th anniversary and a concert for Kosovo as well as competing at competitions on third cornet.

She then moved to Pemberton Old Wigan B Band and played second cornet under the direction of Peter Ashley. Katharine enjoyed contesting and attended the National Finals in 2004 playing ‘Four Noble Truths’.

Katharine next moved to Golborne Brass Band under many conductors, including Eddie Hill and Dave Ashworth, on second cornet. She learnt to played percussion as the band was short but had too many brass players, and contested a few times on percussion.

In 2007 Katharine moved back to Pemberton Old Wigan B band on second cornet. In
2008 they AGAIN attended the National Finals playing ‘The Dark Side of The Moon’, and came a respectable 3rd. Katharine enjoyed playing this piece as it was eerie and enjoyable. While at Pemberton this time a small group of us went to London to meet Harold Bishop for the re-launch of Neighbours on Five. They played the theme tune and it was very exciting.

After the Areas in 2009 Katharine had a break for a few weeks while moving to Manchester. She found it hard to attend rehearsals in Wigan due to work and life commitments so left Pemberton.  Katharine didn’t band much until September 2009 when she was asked by Eddie to help Flixton out, and now has the banding buzz again.

Katharine also plays for a non competing band called Mereside who went on tour to Germany in July 2008.
