What are the National Finals and why is this such a big occassion for Flixton Band?

The National Finals is the most prestigious contest in the banding calendar. During March bands from all over the country compete in a qualifying contest called 'the Regionals' or 'the Area Contest'. Qualifiers from the Regional Contest represent their area at the National Finals which are held in September. This March Flixton Band, alongside Rainford Band were invited to the National Finals to represent the North West. Click Here for coverage of the event. A total of 17 bands from London and Southern Countries, West of England, North of England, North West, Midlands, Yorkshire, Scotland and Wales will take the stage in Harrogate.

This is the first time since 1998, where they competed in the 2nd Section, that the band has qualified for the National Finals. The band represented the North West region in the 3rd Section of the National Championships in both 1990 and 1991. In 1992 the band was promoted to the 2nd Section where the band once again qualified for the Nationals and took the runner up spot at the Contest.

The winning band will take home the title of 'National 3rd Section Champions of Great Britain' and gain straight promotion to the 2nd Section.

How is the band preparing for the event?

Following the summer period the band will start preparation for the National Finals. The band shall be working on the piece
Sinfonietta in Three Movements (Gordon Langford) alongside preparations for the local contest season where the band has been promoted to the Championship Section. The band shall be working hard invidually as well as rehearsals with the whole team and the different sections of the band.

In addition to the musicial preparation the band must work as a team to fundraise for the event. It is a costly expense including a weekend's hotel bill for all the members of the band. The band has been performing at engagements throughout the summer. The band does not currently benefit from any form of sponsorship. If you would like information about how you could support the band as an individual/family please click here for information about our supporters club. For more information on sponsorship please contact our band manager
